Umbrella Workshop

How can we protect ourselves in the midst of life’s uncertainties?

As a therapist we often come across such questions, but without a simple response I began exploring metaphor as a tool for reflective contemplation. The image of the umbrella as a metaphor emerged on a wintry day in Chicago, while noticing an elderly woman crossing a busy intersection, while holding an umbrella. Upon watching her bravely cross the street alone with the umbrella, it reminded me that we all need a source of protection to shield us from uncertain external conditions. But, perhaps we need two sources of protection, one for our physical and another for our inner existence. In the Umbrella workshop, we use film, dialogue and art response to empower imaginative reflections.
